Gordon and Ward left Cranbrook at 7:30 this morning. Marlie and Andrew will be glad to know that I managed to cook up some steel cut oats for them for breakfast. I thought the maple syrup and dried blueberries added a nice touch. Helen packaged up nuts and fruit for their journey and refreshed their water bottles. These boys are not badly treated! After everything was packed up Helen and I headed for our daily troll through the grocery store. Then we gassed up and took to the road. Lots of stops to take pictures of these amazing mountains. The day was glorious sunshine, quite hot but not sweaty. We are all drinking tons of water. After lunch along the river in \Fernie, we forerunners drove another hour or so and arrived in Coleman. Very small town with some pretty dodgy hotels downtown, and a couple of motels that were not bad but they are immediately on the highway. Gorgeous scenery all around but not from the gravel parking lots of the motels. We looked in the next town as well with the same discouraging results. I finally went into the local Sears store (all one room) and the girls in there took me in hand. We phoned various bed and breakfast places and finally found a log house with a red roof that had a suite available for us. Lovely location, nice people AND a hot tub! We were very lucky in the end because of course it is the |July 1 week-end. And in the morning we will be fed Belgian waffles and fresh cinnamon buns! Dinner was back out at the highway but was delicious. Now to bed--I'm the last one and it isn't 10 pm yet.
Madge
This is the story of how boring people can sometimes do exciting things. In this case father and son are going to bike across Canada in what will be either a great bonding experience or a lengthy estrangement. We are lucky enough to have Madge to support us on this ride and to be joined by Andrew, Souhaila, Marlie, Tom and Helen (And Olin of course). May we be strong of body and mind and may the wind be forever at our backs!
