Lake Superior

Name says it all

Ironwood to Michigamme to Munising

OK I am behind two days of my very exciting blog.  We left Ironwood at 6:45 with heavy overcast and some rain.  A motor biker said the next two days of weather going anywhere was crappy.  He was very wrong, the weather was hot but sunny and nice with generally a favourable wind.  I feel like a sailor of the days of sail because it is the most important factor.  Gordon and  I watch and talk about it all the time.  On the way to Michigamme we met up with a cycling group and drafted with 4 others for say 8 KM's then Gordon took the lead and I got behind him and we left them behind.  Aren't we a little smug.  Nice room in Michigamme and we had a nice meal of whitefish at the only restaurant around.  There is no town.  The wine menu is extensive: box red or white.  The waitress (who said she was still was a little hung over from Saturday) asked where we where we staying: we said a mile or say down the road.  Coco (yup that is her name) said she had never heard of it.  Did I mention that there is no town.  Oh well she was very nice.  In bed early but slept in a bit and on the road by 7:30.  Weather and road both good.  I had a flat again at 40 KM.  Rear tire again.  That is number 6 I think.  time to sacrifice virgins to the tire god but can't find any.  This time I hit a stone and blew it out.  My outer tube is old and Gordon thinks it should be changed.  I think we will do this in Sudbury.  We had another great picnic on the shore of lake Superior and then off for the last 50 KM.  We got overheated at one point and stopped into a place and enjoyed the AC, ice tea and filled our bottles with ice.  That worked.  Off to the motel and we are now clean and resting.  So far it appears there is not a good restaurant but the girls are going to check it out.  On to the Sault tomorrow.

Lake Superior spectacular

Ironwood to Michigamme

In Ironwood we wondered what weather the boys were heading off to face.  Looked like rain but then cleared off to be a beautiful day driving through beautiful country.  Our picnic spot was near a rushing river and waterfall .  After lunch Helen and I stopped for an ice cream cone of Jilbert's ice cream.  The afternoon got very hot so we waited by the road to top up the water bottles.  Then onwards to The Bear Paw Inn.  Right by the highway but a pretty spot with water.  Drinks were at the picnic table by the water,  followed by grilled whitefish dinner at Carla's Cozy Cafe.  Bought local tins of beer at the bar to take with us.  Thought of Andrew who would love this area.  Lovely sky which all of a sudden became dark and on came a huge thunderstorm.  Today has been hot and sunny.  Glorious scenery all along Lake Superior.  Munissing tonight and we might hit a beach and go see the pictographs on the rocks.

go!

Go boys go! Thinking of you today as there were riders on the road taking advantage of the rolling hills, blue skies and warm air in West Vancouver. You are doing an amazing job everyday, as are the lovely ladies who work so hard to support you on the road. Keep those electrolytes replenished. Love and hugs from Vancouver. xoxo Tina.

I wanted to include a picture but Andrew said no.

flats

I'm thinking Ward that your tire probably has a piece of glass or something in it, lodged in the rubber maybe?  It's probably like mine which pretty consistently ends up flat.  So yeah, maybe it's time for a new tire?

I rode a measly 50km today along Marine Drive in West Vancouver.  Beautiful view, nice rolling hills.  Ended with a flat though.

it's me

That last post from me, by the way, Andrew

So how's the support team holding up?  Looks like you're finding great picnic sites complete with historic plaques. Someday they'll have plaques to mark the Skinner coast to coast bike trip!  Hey Helen by the time I get onboard there you'll be home I think, too bad for me!  Wish I could've been there at the same time as you.

nice work

Wow, you guys are killing it! Some big big days there, and I see you have some doozies coming up too. Wish I was there to help pull, looks amazing.

On the way to Ironwood, Michigan

Yes!  The sun came out and it was HOT!  We got to Ashland for lunch at Maslowski Beach where there was an amazing view across Lake Superior, shade, a breeze and a picnic table.  Ashland seemed a very cute town, very linked to the outdoors.  There was an old hotel there so people have been coming to this part of Wisconsin for a long time.  Murals have been painted on the walls downtown.  Helen and I stopped and bought inner tubes for Ward at a very nice bike store.  He keeps blowing tires!  Found our riders again shortly afterwards and gave them more water and sustenance.  The sun is high and it is such a relief from the cold.  Helen unzipped her long pants and took off a couple of layers!  Arrived into Ironwood and the Comfort Inn here.  Nice lodgings.  Skyped with Lori and saw Mila in action.  Great dinner at Don and GG's Restaurant.  Whitefish, Cajun style and a salad without added cheese!  Feels good.  Time for early bed again.  Tomorrow we will be on Ontario time.  We are making progress.
