Fort Frances, Ontario to Virginia, Minnesota

Yesterday was a long day for our riders.  Ward had two flats, both on the back tire of course, before lunch and then the ride turned out to be 20 kms. longer than expected.  They had started out early and with the stop at the border and then the flats, etc. they didn't get in until almost 5 pm.
From Gordon,s pictures, I guess they saw the falls at International Falls border station.  The large forestry mill at Fort Frances straddles the falls and seems to encompass the border crossing.  Lots to look at but a very strange set-up!
Then it was a long straight drive past a lot of forest until we ended up at the hamlet of Orr where there was a small grocery store, gas station, liquor store, etc.  It was right beside beautiful Pelican Lake, and yes, a pelican flew in just as Helen and I arrived!  She took a picture to be able to prove to Gordon and Ward that it was true.  There was a cafe nearby so when the boys finally arrived we had soup to go along with the picnic fare.  Lots of fishermen around so there was always something to look at.
Our motel in Virginia is by the roadside but between two lakes.  There is a large floating loon on the lake across from us.  Right in the middle of this town of 8000 souls there is a steam plant beside a lake, which provides the heating for everyone!  Apparently this lake never freezes so it attracts migrating bird species even in the Winter.  The industry is iron mining.  Very interesting topography (hello to John Hopper!) as one can actually see the Iron Mountains half surrounding the town.
We are in the middle of pretty parkland and paved biking trails, all well marked.  I rode my bike around a liitle this morning.  Yesterday afternoon I had found a very nice man at a nearby bike shop who kindly fixed my pedals and disc brake.  Turned out that the owner of the store was from Sudbury!
Had dinner last night at a Mexican restaurant, including the fateful margaritas.  Helen and I walked to and from the restaurant but our over-exerted companions drove.
