Hard to say farewell to Eric, Lori and baby Mila but the boys got away early. I caught up with them near Verner a couple of hours after they left. Next stop---the RIV chip stand in Sturgeon Falls! By the time the boys arrived at 11, I had done a little extra grocery shopping and bought gas. First fill-up that hit $100. It is a lovely Summer day, not too hot but no thought of needing anything other than shorts and t-shirt. Some of you will be interested to know that approaching North Bay I guessed that I would get through three lights without stopping. But as usual, the traffic gurus won and I made two lights and missed five! Hwy 17 has very few paved shoulders and after North Bay, the road is under construction so is even worse. Tons of traffic, including the big trucks. We are so glad we went the southern Superior route earlier in the trip. I arrived at the Dinner Bell Restaurant and Motel early afternoon. Old motel, but the rooms are clean and modernized. At least there is grass between the motel and the road and a deck out front from which to watch the never-ending traffic. Boys rolled in around 2 pm and shortly after, we heard the beep of Roz and Tony Marshall's car. Hooray! Souhaila and Olin were due to arrive later and there were only two double rooms available. Roz and Tony very kindly offered to sleep in with Ward and I. We did have somewhat of a wall separating us, but had to share a bathroom. Great hilarity when the Guelph folk arrived, and Gordon had a warm reunion with his family. Pickerel dinner at the motel, lovely meal wiith an excellent server. Early to bed for us all.
This is the story of how boring people can sometimes do exciting things. In this case father and son are going to bike across Canada in what will be either a great bonding experience or a lengthy estrangement. We are lucky enough to have Madge to support us on this ride and to be joined by Andrew, Souhaila, Marlie, Tom and Helen (And Olin of course). May we be strong of body and mind and may the wind be forever at our backs!
