This morning was decidedly cool and it did not warm up until noon. Gordon and Ward set out up I-75 to the International Bridge. It is a huge high long bridge that goes upand over the locks, both the American and Canadian. Spectacular view but Helen and I were glad we were in a vehicle. Jo and Alice had two sets of visitors early this morning--first the boys and then us. It was lovely to see the girls and to re-connect. Forgot to take a picture; we were talking too much! Also, I guess we forgot in the excitement of Helen receiving the phone call announcing the birth of her first great grandchild, a boy, Nixon Brian Lauener! After leaving Sault Ste. Marie we followed the old road until it petered out, and then on the new highway we hit lots of construction and rough road. Took awhile to get to Bruce Mines where we stopped at the Moose Tracks cafe and craft shop. Delicious leek and potato soup and homemade focaccia bread. Onwards then to Thessalon and Iron Bridge. The scenery was lovely with some wide open views of Lake Huron's North Channel. Closer to Blind River we started to see the rounded pink granite rocks reminiscent of the Benjamin Islands which we remember from boating with Betsy and Richard years ago. It feels like coming home! We are looking forward to Betsy and Richard's arrival for dinner with us. Off to Momique's Restaurant. Things are looking positive. We saw wine glasses and cloth napkins when we made the reservation!
This is the story of how boring people can sometimes do exciting things. In this case father and son are going to bike across Canada in what will be either a great bonding experience or a lengthy estrangement. We are lucky enough to have Madge to support us on this ride and to be joined by Andrew, Souhaila, Marlie, Tom and Helen (And Olin of course). May we be strong of body and mind and may the wind be forever at our backs!
