The usual early start time after breakfast in our room, but this time with Marlie on board! Olin, Tom and I packed up and began our drive, only to be captured shortly afterwards by a McDonald's for two coffees and one hot chocolate. We had noticed a big park with a fountain and playground across the street! After a good play, the journey began, taking us through more lovely farming countryside and adorable Quebecoise villages, all with enormous churches. Also we could often see the mighty St. Lawrence River flowing by our side. As we came around one corner we almost missed seeing our earstwhile cyclists who had stopped at a canteen by the side of the road. Wonderful Marlie had already ordered our steamed hot dogs, all dressed! What a delicious treat at 11 am! Now more driving and the occasional stop for viewing and shopping, and then picnic lunch behind a local community hall where Olin was able to be in the water and dance on the flat rocks. Really a pretty site and shells too! Not far now until we saw Quebec City's skyline and then we were over the big bridge crossing the St.Lawrence and onwards to our bed and breakfast inn in Levi's, with a view back old town Quebec. Olin and I walked down about a zillion steps until we were at the ferry terminal. Found a good place to watch for our cyclists coming off the ferry. A long climb back up. We walked with Marlie but the boys chased up the 10 percent grade on their bikes. We all cleaned up and then had a great meal at a nearby restaurant. We old folks finished the evening on the deck off our room with some wine and a cleansing ale. Music from the Billy Joel concert in Quebec wafted across the water. Time for bed.
This is the story of how boring people can sometimes do exciting things. In this case father and son are going to bike across Canada in what will be either a great bonding experience or a lengthy estrangement. We are lucky enough to have Madge to support us on this ride and to be joined by Andrew, Souhaila, Marlie, Tom and Helen (And Olin of course). May we be strong of body and mind and may the wind be forever at our backs!
